CLASS INFORMATION

  • INTRODUCTION

Koyama Sensei welcomes players of all levels and ages; from complete beginners to advanced!
We are a not-for-profit club and primary motive is to share our passion for Kendo through teaching, learning and supporting.

Beginner players will be introduced to structured lessons learning Kendo etiquette, basic footwork, basic shinai use, Japanese terminology, and all critical fundamentals essential to their growth as a new ‘Kendoka’ (Kendo player).
Once decided, beginners are required to sign a waiver form and register with AUSKF, the All United States Kendo Federation.

We believe in moderation and respite. We operate as a supportive community founded in mutual respect and amiability. Classes are composed of drills, sparring and formations. With our club, we learn collectively and provide gentle guidance and teamwork in everything we do.

I am a complete beginner, can I join?
Yes, of course! We welcome all ages and all levels. Beginners to Kendo are recommended to wear comfortable clothes until ready for your own armor. With regular class attendance, Kendokas (Kendo players) will then be introduced and guided on measuring and purchase of their first kendo-gi (uniform), bogu (armor), and shinai (sword).

I am older/younger and not as fit, could I keep up?
Yes, we embrace all players and will provide utmost support so you can practice to the best of your abilities!

I am already in a different club, can I come join practice?
Absolutely. There is no fee for visitors. Please see classes schedule or reach out to us regarding your expected visit.

    Can my child join?
Yes, children (and even parents) are more than welcome. Children will be taught in a fun, engaging environment with age appropriate techniques. Sensei has long expertise teaching children, including his own son who is now an adept 5th Dan competitive player!

We are a diverse club made up of different backgrounds. Sensei can speak and teach in both English and Japanese.
